About Me
I come from a small fishing town by the Irish Sea (Fleetwood, Lancashire), which is significant in many ways but particularly in one sense – that the people from there look outwards rather than inwards. As a child and now as an adult, I have always aimed to look at things without bias or prejudice.
I work now as a Consultant Physician in the NHS at Macclesfield and Leighton Hospitals and have been heavily involved in:
- Improving the cardiovascular health of the population of Cheshire and reducing rates of obesity in Cheshire.
- Creating preventative strategies to reduce rates of complications in all patients with diabetes, which is my specialist area.
- Empowering patients through education and better communication from health care professionals.
- Trying to achieve better IT systems to improve patient care.
I also trained in Psychiatry and I am keen to help people to better understand mental health issues in the wider health community, especially by encouraging greater social inclusion and improving employment prospects for people with long term mental health problems.
I enjoy debate on the doorstep. Politics is about engagement and communication. I talk to many people from all walks of life in my job. That is the best grounding for anyone who wishes to contribute to political debate.
Let us ensure that Britain is a place where citizens are able to benefit from the innovations and opportunities that define our age and where everyone has a stake in Britain now and in the future.
That means Vote Labour in May 2011. One vote for a positive future.
